ASPIRATION ABORTION — The most common kind.
D&E — DILATION AND EVACUATION
- Aspiration: A procedure that ends a pregnancy by emptying the uterus with the gentle suction of a manual syringe or with machine operated suction.
- Used up to the first 16 weeks after a woman's missed period
- Sedation is possible to help relax and reduce discomfort
- Cervix may be stretched with dilators or with absorbent dilators which are inserted either a day before or hours before the procedure.
- Antibiotics will be given to reduce/prevent infection
- After the tube is inserted, suction will begin either by hand or by machine to empty the uterus
- Takes approximately 5-10 minutes, no including the consultation time and dilation time
D&E — DILATION AND EVACUATION
- Sedation or pain medication is also offered during this procedure
- This procedure usually takes place 16 weeks after the woman's missed period
- Either medication or absorbent dilators will be used to dilate the cervix
- Antibiotics will also be given to prevent infection
- In the later part of the second trimester, a shot may also be required through the stomach to ensure the fetus' heart is stopped before the procedure begins.
- Usually takes 10-20 minutes not including any consultation times or dilation
